The Client

This company is a leading provider of mission-critical software and services to the retail industry. Their solutions integrate with other third party hardware and software vendors to provide customized solutions for their clients. They employ approximately 1,000 skilled staff to support several hundred large commercial customers in the United States and abroad.

The Engagement

Encode was asked to optimize the client's existing infrastructure, including its workflow, and then migrate major components of their development infrastructure from JBOSS/SeeBeyond to WebSphere Application Server (WAS)/WebSphere Business Integrator (WBI).

Critical Services Delivered

Following a business needs analysis, Encode re-designed the infrastructure architecture, and installed, configured and integrated WebSphere Application Server (WAS) and WebSphere Business Integrator (WBI).

Encode also re-designed the workflow for creating customized end user operating environments (for software testing) reducing the time it took to create a new one from up to eight (8) weeks down to one (1) day. This was accomplished by creating a process to "clone" environments through the duplication of hard drives between servers. This involved the creation of custom scripts to change host I.P. addresses, host names, and other key parameters within WebSphere for each unique new host.

At the same time, we created a methodology to reduce the number of environments needed to meet the client's test requirements. The overall reduction in target environment re-creation time achieved spectacular savings for the client.

The client's legacy system used components of SeeBeyond, which are now integrated with WebSphere. Through Encode's efforts, developers from both SeeBeyond and IBM were able to work together and resolve a JMS specification error, which had crippled performance.
